Barra de Santiago - El Imposible (El Salvador)
Few basins were as exemplary for global issues in water management as the small Barra de Santiago - El Imposible basin. Lack of water, inequity, environmental degradation, erosion, pollution and saltwater intrusion were but a few of the problems. In the township of San Francisco Menéndez, for example, nearly one-third of major illnesses were related to poor water quality, and an estimated 70 % of the land suffered from erosion.

Huasco River Basin, Chile
The Huasco River in the Atacama Region of Chile is no typical river...it hardly flows. The Atacama desert is one of the driest places on Earth, yet maintaining the flow of the Huasco river is crucial. The river sustains livelihoods and farming communities, export businesses and ecosystems - all dependent on the river's flow.

River Santa Watershed, Peru
The River (Rio) Santa flows south to north through the Callejon de Huaylas valley under the shadow of the Cordillera Negra, and the imposing Cordillera Blanca, the 2nd highest mountain range in the world. Glaciers in the Cordillera Blanca make up around 70% of annual flow in the Rio Santa, and also drain east to contribute to the headwaters of the Amazon.
