In Mesoamerica BRIDGE works on developing water governance capacities through trainings, exchanges of experiences and dissemination of lessons learnt as well as enhancing the water Champions network.  BRIDGE activities are implemented in three pilot sites: The Sumpul (Honduras - El Salvador), the Goascorán (Honduras - El Salvador), and the Sixaola (Costa Rica - Panama) river basins.

Goascoran River Basin (Honduras-El Salvador)

BRIDGE is supporting the Binational Management Committee of the Goascoran River to strengthen its role, update the basin management plan and improve its effectiveness for a sustainable development and appropriate transboundary management of the international river. Further activities aim at engaging with different stakeholders at all level (form local to high level national officials) in order to empower them and reinforce their participation to the decision-making process and executive phase. The expected result is long-term planning, appropriate protection and sustainable management of the shared river basin.

Sumpul River Basin (Honduras-El Salvador)

The Sumpul River Basin is located in the Trifinio area, which is shared between Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. A tri-national agreement was signed between these three countries in 1988. The Sumpul Binational Commission was established within this framework and BRIDGE will contribute to the formalisation and consolidation of this institution and up-scaling the process.

Sixaola River Basin (Costa Rica-Panama)

The BRIDGE project seeks to reinforce the institutional structure, the operational capacities and role of the recently established Binational Commission of the Sixaola River with the aim that the Commission will be able to plan and carry out its activities with decreasing donor dependency. Trainings and workshop are among the main activities developed to reinforce public participation, allow multi-stakeholders’ interaction, raise awareness on issues of governance and IWRM and empower interested actors.
